i have a legal copy of xp home but i think that it was taken from my house
for awhile but returned. sounds funny i know. but how can i find out if it
was instaled on another pc or not and what can i do about it and can i get
then unactavated

You can't, really. If they installed it and tried to activate it, and it
said they couldn't, they could easily have phoned up MS and activated over
the phone.

If you have the CD and the COA (little sticker with Product Key), then it's
not worth your time to figure anything else out. You are the legal owner of
that software product.
