I have been using Windows XP for the past 2 1/2 years
without any problems. Recently, I installed 'SpyBot' and
began having problems. Portions of my most used program
(Hallmark card Maker) began not working. While trying to
remedy that program, other programs began to fail. I did
a system restore without success. Then I did a factory
restore and apparently did something terribly wrong
because after reinstalling XP (it was an upgrade), I find
that some of my most basic programs such as 'Spell Check'
and 'Microsoft Works' are no longer on my computer Do
you have any advice?

Kathy,

When you did the factory restore you did not do anything terrible - you
simply returned your pc to the condition it was in when you got it from the
factory. Everything you installed/updated/added is gone and you must install
everything again.

Now you know why it is not in your best interest to buy a computer with
software pre-installed and then be stuck with a factory restore CD as your
only means to try to make things right. You are better off buying a system
with NO software installed and then buy only that which you need.

Tough lesson to learn.

For those just starting out with a computer, bundled preloaded software is
less of a challenge to both ability and finances than buying OS and software
to install oneself..

Contact the computer manufacturer support and ask if they have bundled
software cds that they could supply for your model.. or look for an icon on
your desktop that may lead to where you can install the original software
bundle.. if you original had a manual, now would be a good time to look at
it..
