I have a computer that was built for me in 2004, Today everything went haywire.
I lost file c:\windows\system32\config\system I tried to reinstall XP and
nothing . I also tried to format my computer causing me of course to lose
everything. When this was all finished I got an error message that I was
missing NTLDR. I did excactly what tech said to do and that was to copy it
form the disk to the c drive. When this got completed upon reboot of th
esystem my monitor would periodically shut down with non ending reboot of the
computer and I would get a message that signal was lost. I am once again
trying to format. Lets see what happens. Any suggestions to what I may be
doing wrong?

You need to provide more information for anyone to see if it is possible
to pinpoint what is wrong. Your system was automatically rebooting
because of system failure. You need to capture the Stop Error report and
to post this when seeking help. It sounds like the registry has
corrupted but what has caused this can only be a guessing game.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure even after you have
solved the problem as it's better disabled. Check for variants of the
Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

If you are using a wireless keyboard and the F8 key does not work
substitute a wired keyboard and mouse for this exercise only.

You may have a hardware failure. Checking out the hard drive and memory
can be done by many users but determining whether you have a power
supply failure is less easy for a home user. This link offers good
advice on troubleshooting hardware problems:

Sounds like your compute is failing / going to fail. You might want
to consider replacing as it might not work well if the format /
reinstall completes.

Hardware that might be failing:

Power Supply
Memory
Hard drive
motherboard

You can start by replacing hte hard drive and see if the format / re-
install completes. If not, I would not start getting any of the other
"parts" since replacing each and everyone would / could cost you the
price of a "shiny" new computer.

You didn't leave a Floppy in the A: Drive did you?
Also before spending more time and money, go to the manufactures web site of
the maker of your Hard Drive and download their diagnostics utility and run
it on the drive. It a lot of cases it can fix bad sectors and make the drive
usable for many more years, then again it may be non repairable.
