My current operating system is Windows XP Home Edition
and it is the only operating system installed on my PC.
My question is can I reinstall XP over the existing
Windows XP operating system. Without creating havoc with
my PC?
Why do you want to do this? Is there a problem that needs to be
resolved and this is the recommended solution?
You can do a Repair Install provided you have a complete Install CD
for your Windows XP. However if your Windows XP is an OEM "System
Recovery" CD then you cannot do the repair install. But not all OEM
versions are on System Recovery CDs - there are some who do provide
complete install CDs. And if your XP is an retail version then you
have a complete install CD, even if it is the retail upgrade version.
See
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm for instruction
on doing a Repair Install. Note that the Repair Install will
preserve all of your installed applications, user data files, and
program configuration settings. However all repeat all Windows
Updates will have to be reinstalled.
Good luck
