I am running win 98/millenium upgrade, i have a p2 350
6gig hd w256 ram.

I want to purchase xp, will my system handle it and should
I get rid of the current op system first or copy over it?

Thanks in advance,

Bob G.

All of the components you cite above are minimal. Yes, you can
run XP with them. You won't have great performance, obviously,
but it should at least be acceptable.

Although many people will tell you to always do a clean
installation, I disagree. I recommend at least trying an upgrade
over the top of Me. If it works well (and it probably will) you
save yourself a lot of work. If you have problems, you can always
decide to change your mind and reinstall cleanly.

It is minimal, but will run, CPU low end: don't expect to be able to do
the fancier multimedia things like watch DVD movies (but you would be no
worse off than in ME), RAM quite adequate; Hard disk space will be
tight though, and is the place where I would look to buying a second
drive to put in as a data partition. Quite sizeable hard drives are
cheap these days, and can always be moved on if you buy a new machine
later.

I'd definitely start by doing an Upgrade. You will probably not be able
to spare hard disk space to save the present system files so as undo if
things do not work out, but you would still be able to reformat and do a
clean install. Read Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm

Once running One thing I would do straight off is go to Control Panel -
System - Advanced - Performance and Click Settings -
use the Custom setting and uncheck the top ten boxes. These eye candy
effects do use up quite a lot of CPU power
