is this rectifiable or am i up the creek without a paddle

Usually a default Windows XP installation has an `administrator' account. Unless this is the account you renamed it should be active. At the logon screen this account usually isn't visable. Press `Control-Alt-Del' at the logon screen and for the username, type administrator. Try using a blank password or administrator as the password to login. If neither of those work, contact the vendor you bought the system from as they may setup a password to get into customer systems when a customer has glitches on the system.

There is a linux utility that allows you to reset the
administrators password even though you don't know the
original. I don't know who in your area you would contact
to find the utility or to run it for you.

Also in the future you may wish to use an account for your
Son and an account for yourself which will prevent this in
the future. When you want to discipline your son you
merely lock his account out and activate it again when you
wish. Thusly never touching yours. Also you may want to
giving your Son less than Administrator Rights.
