When I create and save a Word document, it shows up in my files as a WordPad
document. How can I change this back to Word documents like they should be?
 
The icon used by explorer to display a file depends on the 'File
Association" of that FileType (or 'file extension')

It's likely that *.RTF files are associated with WordPad. (perhaps *.doc)

see: Control Panel, Folder Options app, File Types tab.
 
Thanks Mark. At the risk of sounding totally ignorant, I need to ask: then
what? I've located the file types tab in the folder ops app, but how do I
change/check for this mix-up?
 
Rightclick any file with that icon, and click Open_with, put a check in
"Always use this..." and Browse to the Winword.exe file.
