Have you tried dropping to a Command Prompt typing chkdsk c: /r

I have seen all kinds of weird problems fixed this way.

Also you might have your memory tested.

I just installed windows xp this spring. It worked alright but now it is
crazy. This thing will tie up without the least bit of use. Then I do a
control alt del and stop the program from running and I am back to the desk
top.
After I do that a few dozen times I am angry. I am running at 850mghz on a
compaq mv740 millenium. or
presidio, have plenty of storage space on the hard drive. I have a pentium
3 with 128meg ram. I tried the method of taking it back to say april 1st
and that did not work. So what can I do? Does anyone know?

This newsgroup is not for general purpose computer support - it's specifically for the database program, Microsoft Access. You might get more expert answers in one of the windowsxp newsgroups.

That said... could you perhaps have some "spyware" or "adware" inadvertantly installed, or perhaps a virus? These can cause these symptoms. Be sure you have up to date virus definitions and run a virus scan; go to http://www.lavasoftusa.com and to http://www.safer-networking.com and download the two spyware utilities (free for private use) and clean up your system.

Of course, you should also consider running the builtin disk defragmenter on your C drive, if you haven't done so.
