can any one tell me what XP uses for word processing program. I have a
program that requires Word 2000 but when I try to use it with XP it doesn't
work. Is there any way to purchase Word 2000 by itself or must I purchase a
package deal.

The only thing that comes with XP that can be reasonably described as a word
processor is Wordpad. Word can be purchased as a standalone app or as part
of the Office suite or Works suite. The current version is 2003.

WinXP is an operating system. As such, it contains _no_ word
processing capabilities. It does come with two rudimentary text
editors, NotePad and WordPad, but neither on can perform any advanced
word processing functions.

Neither the Microsoft Office application suite, nor any of its
individual component applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access,
Outlook, etc.), have _ever_ been "part" of *any* Windows operating
system. They are, and always have been, separate applications, that
must be purchased and installed separately.

Yes, you can purchase stand alone Microsoft Word, but you can also download
a Word viewer from Microsoft, and even a free Office suite that is
compatible with Word.
If you only need Word, but occasionally need a basic spreadsheet, database,
calendar, etc. your best value for your money is Works Suite 2005 check the
online software vendors for great prices on Works.

I your budget is thin, you can download Open Office developed by Sun and
released to Open Source for free for personal use. It is a fairly robust
Office alternative to the real MS Office Suite and runs most of the
documents created by MS Office.
