I have just upgraded my pc with a new motherboard,
processor and copy of windows xp home ed. It installed
seemingly fine and i can boot into windows xp without a
hitch as long as the windows xp cd is in the drive - if
it is not, or the boot sequence omits the cd drive it
refuses the boot up and stays on "Verifying DMI POOL...
Update Success" until eventually returning a "DISK BOOT
FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" message.

I have tried running repair installs over the top as well
as completely reformating and reinstalling - still no
luck. I also used the Recovery Console to fixboot and
fixmbr but these had no effect. CHKDSK returns some
errors on the hard drive when checked but after using it
with the /R command nothing else has changed.

Any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Have you checked the boot up sequence in BIOS to make sure
that the correct IDE number is called out for booting up
with the Harddrive first? It should be IDE0.
