Windows XP & Windows ME file sharing success

Greetings Stu Wilson,

NetBEUI is never necessary in Windows networking. All networking functions
are available using TCP/IP as the only network protocol. It is okay to use
NetBEUI but keep in mind that it is a unsupported protocol in XP and
Microsoft won't answer questions if you have problems with it.

Netbeui is the ONLY way I could get my ME computer to see the XP shared
files. I tried many, many suggestions but nothing worked until I installed
NETBEUI. TCP/IP would not let me see the XP machine.

Stu,

not a good idea. Please have a look at
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm for most causes of such
problems. If yours is not among them, I'd be surprised and would
like to know more about it.

These problems are widespread, but can be traced back to a few
causes.

Hans-Georg,
I had been to your page and tried all your suggestions the best I could.
One I did not do was uninstall the Computer Associates AntiVirus. Will
running the netbeui cause any problems? Everything seems to work just fine.
I spent hours and hours trying different suggestions to get this to work and
now that it does work, I would rather not fiddle with unless there is cause
for concern using the netbeui.

Stu,

first of all, I'm surprised. This is a very rare case. I don't
know about the CA AntiVirus in particular, but there have been
networking problems caused by Antivirus software that could only
be alleviated by completely uninstalling the software.

Running more than one transport protocol at the same time can
cause problems, but in theory it's supposed to work. If you see
no other way than to keep NetBEUI in addition to TCP/IP, make
sure the Windows networking bindings are disabled for TCP/IP to
avoid conflicts.

Hans-Georg,

How do I make sure Windows networking binds are disabled for TCP?IP?

Stu,

it's in the advanced settings of the network connections window.
Uncheck the bindings for TCP/IP, but leave the bindings for
NetBEUI in place.
