I have an IBM Aptive 2153 and I am trying to upgrade from
Windows 98 to Windows XP. My system meets the minimum
requirements but the install program flags a compatibility
problem with the hard drive. Here is the message:

Please note that some of the following entries might be
software that is registered as hardware.

Hard disk controllers
Storage Adapter Bridge Module (TPP)

I am having truble finding out what this means. I checked
with IBM and they don't have any hard drive patches for me
and they can't even tell me if this problem is related to
software or hardware.

Could someone please tell me if you have had a similar
experience and what I need to do to correct the problem. I
don't even know where to look at this point and I am on
the verge of purchasing a new computer.

Been there. Done that.
I checked the IBM web site and called the support line.
Both were useless. The Aptiva model is 2153 E2U.
Have you upgraded a similar model to XP?

Here's what I think is happening - your Aptiva has proprietary hardware
that is incompatible with XP. Because it's an older model, drivers will
not be written for the newer operating system. Keep the Aptiva with
Win98 on it - the machine will run best with this os. Get yourself a
new computer with XP. Although someone at IBM might have a more
authoritative answer for you, I think that upgrading the Aptiva will be
impossible.

K6 333MHz(512KB) 48MB 6GB HDD IDE PCI/ISA Microtwr(2X4) ATI 32X CD 56K Win98
With those specs, plus the "special" parts that IBM fit to the Aptiva's, I
personally would not attempt to load WinXP.
I sold my 2161 Aptiva 6 months ago after successfully reformatting and
dumping all the IBM "Enhancements".
I loaded a clean Win98SE, which IMHO is all that the Aptiva can handle.
(The later Pentium 2 models are a different story)
If the WinXP install baulks at compatibility then I personally would desist,
but if you are determined to press on then why not open the Aptiva, find out
the brand of the hard drive, and start looking on the manufacturers site.
(IBM don't always use IBM drives)

International brand PCs design for ONE OS only ie the one it came with.

You got what you paid for.
