The floppy drive is seen by the BIOS, and can be accessed through DOS. However in Windows XP, the drive does not display in My Computer, and typing "a:\" or "b:\" in the Run box gives a "... refers to a location that is unavailable" message. Device Manager doesn't show a floppy controller or floppy drive, and there are not any "Unknown Devices" or "bangs" (unknown hardware).
Attempting "Add New Hardware" does not give an option to install a floppy drive, even manually
This is happening on all of our systems, all with the same motherboard
An MSDN search found articles 812489 and 817196, neither of which helped
The CMOS is set correctly (again the drive can be booted to DOS, and is then fully accessible). Several CMOS variations were tried with no luck. The latest driver set for the motherboard was also installed with no change
A different brand of floppy drive was installed (which is known to work on other systems) which also did not help
