Windows XP will not boot

My H-P Laptop will not boot in Windows XP. This happened
all of a sudden after shutting down and then rebooting.
I got a black screen and a message:

"Windows could not start because the following
file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32
\ntoskrnl.exe>.


Any suggestions? Thanks
