I just upgraded Windows 2000 with Windows XP Professional,
but the XP Welcome window does not show up on startup.
Instead, the startup goes through the 2000 DOS-like
procedure where I have to specifically choose to open XP
instead of some other alternatives left over from 2000.
Then, when XP opens, it totally bypasses the Welcome
window and opens directly into my account, the
administrator account. How can I get it to show the
Welcome window with the icons for the Limited Users, Guest
User, and Administrator?

Please respond to me at (e-mail address removed)

the welcome screen in Pro doesn't show the Administrator Account by
default, and doesn't show the guest account unless that has been enabled
(AFAIK....)

Hi,

WinXP inherits logon behavior from W2K via an upgrade. To remove the
boot.ini entry:

Go to Start/Run and type in: msconfig
Then go to the Boot.ini Tab and click on Check All Boot Paths. If you
receive a warning about a duplicate path: Do you want to remove, choose
yes.

Or...

Right click the My Computer icon/Properties/Advanced/Startup and
Recovery/Settings/System Startup/Edit.

Start/Control Panel/Users/Change the Way users log on or off/Use Welcome
Screen and Use Fast User Switching.

Enable the Welcome Screen (Line 80)

The "Welcome" Logon Screen Does Not Appear

I have Windows XP Professional on my laptop, and startup
goes directly to the Welcome window which shows the icons
for all the users (administrator, limited users, guest).
The XP Pro installation on the laptop was an upgrade to XP
Home.

But the installation of XP Pro on my desktop PC is an
upgrade to Windows 2000. On that PC I not only do not get
the Welcome window, but I also get a DOS-type intro before
XP Pro opens directly to the administrator account. All
the accounts (administrator, limited users, guest) are
active, but without the Welcome window they do not show on
startup. The only account that can be reached on startup
is the administrator's account, and it is reached without
having to use the administrator's password.

I'd like to get the Welcome window introduction on my PC
just as I have it on my laptop. My PC has 1GB of RAM and
100 GB of hard drive.

Where do I get a news reader from?

You have one. Outlook Express comes with Windows. It's far
preferable to use the web-based interface you're using for
newsgroups.

Sorry? :o) It's just the whole CDO thing. That is where your
comment should go: "Ooooh - nasty!"

In the "olden" days, the links on the MS Support site opened up the
newsgroup in OE! I wonder what made them start with this 'orrible web access
thing?

They at least seem to be offering 'both' this week, which is a step back
towards rationality.

I would like to thank all of you for taking the time and
trouble to help me. I printed out the instructions given
to me and followed them as carefully as I could. But in
the early hours of the morning I believe I made a wrong
turn and things got nasty. I had to use my XP CD to boot
up and I must not have noticed that its reinstall would
not be the kind which would deliver all my programs and
files in recognizable places. But, with the help of my
daughter and a lot of my sweat and persistence, I believe
I have restored everything - with the exception of the
Outlook address book. My daughter does not use an address
book and so neither of us know where it might be lurking.
I guess I'll find it eventually or retype in all my email
addresses.

Once again, thank you for all your help. Oh, yes, I now
have the Welcome window appearing, and boot up is now
faster.

Hi Aromano,

Ken has answered you, thanks Ken. What happens with the CDO posters is that
they generally post over and over and over and never find that there may
have been numerous replies. It tends to become monotonous at times.
