I get the above message when trying to start up windows xp pro. No new SW,
no new downloads, nothing new.

Now I went to the boot sequence and get it to go the CD first with the
windows XP in it. But it stays on Windows Setup for 15 minutes now and does
not go further.

How can I get to the file this way that windows message says it wants?

Or - how can I get to RESTORE?

do a search on yahoo or google for windows xp missing hal.dll
most of the time it's due to corrupted boot.ini I see your booting to the
cd, have you gotten to the repair option?

NO, the weindows xp cd is stuck for 30 minutes now at "Windows setup".

I can not get beyond that.

How do I proceed now? Safe mode does not work, it will not get there. I get
the above message trying to get to Safe Mode.

I also see no way to get to a command prompt or Restore.

What do I do now?

sounds like a worse issue than hal.dll missing sounds more like the HD has a
profound fault on it, is it NTFS or FAT file format, if FAT or FAT32 you can
use a normal win98 boot floppy to get to a dos prompt and then maybe perform
a simple checkdisk with fix , if NTFS then try getting NTDOS to read the
format

That disk is formatted for NTFS.

.. I did switch harddrives of an External enclosure, because I was not sure
whether the harddrive in it (an 80 GB) was working properly.
I put into the External enclosure an old 9.1 GB IBM disk. I found the
external hookup was correct and switched back to the original 80 GB
harddrive in the enclosure.

But I fail to understand what that has to do with the OS, since it is NOT on
the external disk.

I have 3 internal disks. Disk 1 is partitioned into C drive and G drive.
They work fine. They also hold the windows xp OS.
Disk 2 is primarily for video work.
Disk 3 has the Applications .

When I boot up with only disk 1 and 2 connected plus the external disk, I
get to Windows and the desktop.

When I add disk 3 I get the message upon booting that it is looking for the
file "hal.dll".

I do not know why it is looking for it when disk 3 is added, since it does
not have the windows xp OS on it. NOR do I know how to proceed. I have the
"hal.dll" file in a number of places on the disk 1 and under wiindows, but
what good is that when I connect disk 3 and get hung or stuck at the error
message looking for "hal.dll" ?

In your System BIOS you have somehow set Disk 3 to be the First Boot Device.
Steve

Steve, you were absolutely correct. It did try to boot from disk #3, but WHY
all of a sudden, I cannot understand.

But you were right on the money and after I went into BIOS and changed it.
it all worked again.

Thanks a lot!!!!!
