Each time I log onto my pc, I have to wait about 5 minutes for the desktop to
fully load up, before I can continue.
I have removed many old and unused documents/application/folders etc, but my
pc remains to be very slow.
This is also what happens when I surf the internet and even when I browse My
Documents.
Is there anyway that I can improve the speed of my pc. Any help will be
appreciated.

When was the last time you did a clean up/chkdsk/defrag? If you don't
have it, get Crap Cleaner from www.ccleaner.com and run it to clean up
all the crap off your computer.

Wouldn't be nice if we knew the specs on your "slow" machine so that we
could actually pin it down to a specific part instead of just user error??

I'd be curious, Peter, just exactly how knowing the system specs will assist
you, in any way, to decipher what maybe the reason for a slow start? IMHO
there are many reasons for slow starts. Let me list but a few. Too many
programs loading at startup. Check the msconfig\startup tab and uncheck
anything you don't need. Go>start>run and type in msconfig and click ok and
then click the startup tab. All you really need starting right away is your
AV, Firewall(3rd party) and a real time spyware scanner like MS Defender.
Everything else can be started as needed. Then there's the usual "Automatic"
updating. I recommend that you never have any auto updating at all. Do it
manually. That way you know what is connecting to the i-net and, exactly what
it's doing. The NTFS Check maybe set to an inordinately long time. In most
cases it alone is around the 30 second mark and that certainly isn't
necessary. Make sure that you do not have any programs set to do an automatic
system check at boot time. People often set their AV or Spyware programs to
do a check at boot time and then forget about it. Then of course there's the
usual culprits like adware\spyware\malware, registry defragmentation and
system defragmentation. So here are the tools I recommend you get and use.
Microsoft Defender, AdAware SE, CCleaner, NTRegOpt and Diskeeper. The very
last thing that you may want to look at is the unecessary loading of services
that you never even use.

If you need more then please post back. TTFN.

As the Run key in the HKLM registry basically reflects what is on the
msconfig\startup lets look there and see if you have an unwanted entry.
go>start>run and type in msconfig and then hit ok and then click the startup
tab. Now look at what you have starting every time XP starts. All you really
need IMHO are your AV program, a 3rd party firewall, and perhaps Microsoft
Defender with real time scanning for adware\spyware\malware. Everything else
should only start when and if you need\want it. TTFN.
