On my Windows XP Home machine, I have the memory set to system managed and
still it is slow to boot up and sometimes I get a "The system has recovered
from a serious error" message. Why doesn't Windows manage the memory
efficiently?

It does, you must set the system requirements to meet your systems
capabilities.
In other words, do you have enough RAM. To run WindowsXP properly you
should have a minimum of 256megs of RAM, preferably 512megs. To make
your machine a "lean, mean computing machine", do this:
Start>Run>type MSCONFIG and click Enter
Go to the Startup tab and uncheck/disable everything except your anti-virus
program, if Norton, it will start with NAV.
Click Apply and Close, then reboot. Close notice after reboot that you've
changed
your startup. Before you do the above, clock (count) have long it takes to
boot,
and do it again after the above changes.
Disabling does not delete anything, it only stops programs/applications from
loading and using valuable system resources. All programs will activate when
clicking their respective icons. Good luck. :~)
