Windows XP Very SLOW Since Reinstall

I just did a reformat of my C drive and reinstalled
Windows XP to get rid of a lot of junk. Now it is
extremely slow, waiting several minutes before starting
programs and sometimes making it necessary to reboot.
After reboot it is somewhat faster but then slows down
again.

In the "processes" tab of task manager I notice
that "svchost.exe" is listed 4 times. Once under "Local
Service", once under "Network Service" and twice
under "System". Is this correct? If not, what do I do
to change the settings.

I have 256 mb RAM and a Pentium III processor--it
shouldn't be this slow.

I'd like to know how to speed this thing up!

Sorry, I don't have an answer.

Maybe it should have been named "Windows XT". Any application run from the
command line runs *way* slower than Windows 98. Makes any Pentium based
computer run like an old 8088 processor. It would be nice if they could come up
with a fix for that bug. I doubt it, though. NT and 2000 have been the same.

Yes - that is normal. Svchost runs a slew of services, loaded in
groups, and there is one instance to each group.

Such slowness is likely to be the result of a lot of fragmentation, and
of the layout not yet being optimised by the 'prefetch' facility. Run
Defrag and run it again in four days, a week, and things should
improve.

Also by default a lot of 'eye-candy' effects are implemented, which suck
up CPU to no very good purpose. At Control Panel - System - Advanced -
Performance click Settings and uncheck the top ten boxes
