As you have discovered, changing the display name doesn't really change
the account. You need to make a new account with the desired name and
copy your old account settings to it. Here are links to help you do
this (it is easy). You must log into the new account at least once in
order to copy anything to it. You must import your e-mail messages and
addresses to the new user profile before you delete the old profile.

Mike;
The easiest way is to create a new account and transfer the data:

You need to log into the new profile at least once before you can copy the
data.
Once you are sure the new profile is working properly, you can delete the
old profile using User Accounts in the Control Panel.

The user profile folders (C:\Documents and Settings\Username)
_cannot_ be renamed, even if the associated user account has been.
So, your best course of action would be to log on using the built-in
Administrator account, create a new user account, with the username
desired, log into it one time, and then copy any desired data from the
misnamed profile. You can then delete the old user account(s).
