If I do a system restore back to a period before an upgrade do I lose that
upgrade? If I then undo that system restore is the upgrade restored?

Upgrade to what? System restore backs up the registry and certain monitored
files. It will certainly undo a windows update, and for updates to other
programs, depending on what it is, can leave the program installation in an
inconsistent state depending on what files are involved. Here is a link to
an excellent site on system restore describing what files it monitors. If
you need more info be more specific.

Ok, I understand now. Yes if you do a system restore, any updates installed
through by windows update after the date of the restore point will be
removed.

Like, what do you mean by "upgrade"?
If I then undo that system restore is the upgrade restored?

Why would you wanna do that?

If you undo a system restore, you get back the state that existed prior to
that system restore.
