Windows XP Upgrade

Wish I'd found this message board earlier I would have known some of the issues.... I've been trying to upgrade my ME to XP home. I had initially disabled virus programs but once the upgrade was done nothing worked and I lost most of my personal files. After spending two hours on the phone with the nice people at Microsoft, losing all email, addresses, access to outlook and some personal files, I was told to Unistall everything and start over. Well, I've uninstalled XP, Antivirus and Antispam. The compatibilty testing was done and it identified programs/devices with problems. I've taken care of all of them only to continue getting one blocked issue. The Compatibility wizard keeps stating I have a Microsoft shared fax client that is blocking the upgrade and will not allow the upgrade until it has been removed from the computer. I have searched high & low....I do not have any such program/software in my system. PLEASE, tell me how I should proceed in order to get this system up and running....It's been FOUR DAYS that I've been working on it. I do not want to do a New Installation as I will lose the rest of my files.
 
Although the upgrade install is suppose to work as well as a new reformat
and install , it is not always so. My advice would be to backup all needed
files and reformat and install XP only. Have your 98 disk handy , for you
will be prompted for the key number as verification for the upgrade disk.
Disconnect all hardware except mouse and keyboard and good luck. Jym
