If person legally acquires computer with Windows 2000 OS with agreement to
format HD and then wants to upgrade it to XP, would it be reformatted? Or is
the computer worthless because wouldn't the CD for Windows 2000 be required
to upgrade? I think the computer is under volume licensing.

do you have any windows OS? Win 98, or WinME? They can be used for upgrade.
Borrow one.

A. You cannot "upgrade" to Windows XP in this instance. You'll have to purchase
a "Full Version" of Windows XP and perform a "Clean Install" which requires
reformatting the drive, thus removing the current Windows 2000 installation.

You can't legally aquire the computer with 2000 on it if the owner was
under a Volume license. The license still belongs to the company that
bought it.

If you don't have the CD/Key then you don't own it.

None of the above. Windows 2000 belongs to the company that had the
computer, to be legal you must format the harddrive BUT you can still
use the XP upgrade version by simply buying a qualifying product such
as Windows 98 or NT 4.0. Windows 95 also qualifies and it should be
VERY cheap at a swap meet or on line.

You can upgrade an Installed Win200 with an XP Upgrade CD, run from the
2000. Enter Install, continue with Upgrade. If you want to do a clean
install, it would need a proper (ie non - 'restore') CD of that
qualifying system to be shown during setup. I don't think the earlier
system being Volume licensed affects this matter
