If I have windows xp pro sp1 installed on my computer can I install windows
xp home edition sp 2?

x-no-archive: yes

You can get SP2 for Windows XP Professional off the Microsoft website. There
are two ways to install it:

1. Use Windows Update.
2. Download the full SP2 (network version) and use that executable to do the
update.

They are asking about installing XP Home.

Yes - as a clean install or as a dual boot - but not as an "upgrade".
Pro to Home is a downgrade and not supported. Why do you want to do
this? Home and Pro are identical in core features with Pro having a few
more features.

Others have answered your question, but I'll ask why? Are you aware that
there's nothing in Home that's not also in Professional?

XP Professional and XP Home are exactly the same in all respects, except
that Professional has a few features (mostly related to networking and
security) missing from Home. For most (but not all) home users, even those
with a home network, these features aren't needed, would never be used, and
buying Professional instead of Home is a waste of money.

For details go to
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.asp

Also note one other point not mentioned on any of those sites: Professional
allows ten concurrent network connections, and Home only five.

Ken,

We had a computer come to us that appears to be pirated. They had windows
98, a computer consultant installed a non legal copy of xp pro sp1. The
home user knows no difference. The cost to them is 100 difference. If it
was possible to upgrade using Home sp2, then that would be great.

Thank you,

Mark

OK, I understand. Sorry to tell you that there's no way to downgrade from
Professional to Home, and a clean installation is the only option.

Thank you,

As stated before XP Pro can't be upgraded to Home - just a clean install
which can be done from a retail upgrade copy of XP Home. Programs will
have to be reinstalled and data restored from backup.

Then you will have to do a "clean" installation of XP Home as there is no
official "upgrade" path from Pro to Home. You might consider making use of
the Files and Settings transfer wizard if possible ..

Thank you Ken, Rock, and Infosink.
