If you don't have success upgrading then backup the important data, then run
the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard on it to migrate data and settings,
and to be in the best shape, use a drive imaging program to image the
windows 2000 installation to an external hard drive, then do a clean install
of XP. Apps will have to be reinstalled from original media, then use FAST
to bring back the data and settings.

Win 2000 can't go to XP, it must go to XP Pro

There is no plain XP, it's either XP Home or XP Pro. Correct, the upgrade
path is from win2k to XP Pro. The OP didn't specify if it is Home or Pro,
but I don't think it gives an error like that if you try to upgrade to XP
Home.

Yes it is XP pro...is there any way of instaling it and not having to wipe
everything clean? I dont really have the know how to back everything up like
you said. Thanks

You're last statement concerns me. Are you saying you don't regularly
backup all the important data? One should always have a full and complete
backup. This can be as simple as copying important files to CD/DVD, flash
drive or an external hard drive to using a commercial backup program, to
using a drive imaging program (which is my preference and recommendation)
such as Acronis True Image Home, version 10.

Well there are only two ways to install an OS, upgrade or clean. Sorry if I
knew what was going on with your upgrade and knew another way I would have
given it to you. I'm not an expert in upgrading from Windows 2000 so I
don't know what the issue is.

If you try a clean install and that fails then it could be a hardware
problem. I repeat my recommendation given in the original post. Get
Acronis True Image Home version 10, image the system to an external hard
drive, then try the clean install. If that doesn't work you can always
restore the earlier image and have a running Windows 2000 system.
