Windows XP updates problem

I've been trying to install some critical XP updates from
a disk, and also from Microsoft's website, but keep
getting something called a QFE Installer error with the
following error message:

WEUpdate cannot retrieve information needed for setup
from database.

Setup cannot continue.

Anyone tell me what this is and what to do about it,
