My windows XP update does not seem to work.

When I go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com it gives me a screen which
says this text below. And it just stays there.

How can I fix this problem?

I am using XP Pro and IE version 6.08.2800.1106

Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software...

Depending on your connection speed, this might take a minute. During
this time, you may receive one or more security warnings. Review each
security warning to ensure that the content is signed by Microsoft,
and then click Yes to install the software.

Let's get one thing really clear right now - this isn't Microsoft tech
support. These are peer-to-peer support groups and everyone - including
the MVPs - is a volunteer. At least a thousand new posts appear each
day, often made by people who have 1) not researched their problem
themselves; 2) who post with incomplete information about the problem
and their system; 3) and who don't include what they have already done
to troubleshoot and the result. So, since you fit into at least
categories 2) and 3), there was no way for me to know that you had
already tried the Troubleshooter.

Now, since I don't have any idea what else you've tried, here are
generic Windows troubleshooting steps:

1) scan with current antivirus ("current" means a version not earlier
than 2002 but using updated virus definitions); 2) remove spyware with
Spybot Search & Destroy (www.security.kolla.de) and Ad-aware
(www.lavasoftusa.com). Be sure to update these programs before running,
and it is a good idea to do virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode; 3) delete
temporary and Temporary Internet Files; 4) stop unnecessary services
programs from starting with Windows - see www.blackviper.com for
services info and www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm for programs
info - 5) look in Event Viewer for clues.

Also, check your firewall and other security settings in case they are
too restrictive. If you don't know where to look for these or how to
change them, post back. If you need more help with your problem, then
please repost, taking items 2) and 3) above into account.

Wat it is and wat it ain't?????

At least around here no-one takes themselves too seriously for
their overall health and welfare.

PS: Ya fergot to tell lil' OP to check his wall plug,
preferably with a kitchen fork. If it knocks him on
his hat-rack foundation, well, he's probably got power.

Now, don't hold back - let us know your TRUE feelings on the
