i've been trying to get xp off and revert to win2k.
however, when i boot from the win2k cd and begin the
installation process a slew of .sys and .dll files now
can't get copied. hitting esc to skip these files
renders the install unuseable. so again i have had to
install xp, although it didn't recognize the disk at
first. weird. anyway, i have installed win2k dozens of
times and never had a problem. eliminating the
possibility of just a scratch on the disk, is this type
of issue indicative of anything in particular? thanks in
advance for your help.

To install Windows 2000:

The Windows 2000 CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows 2000 to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP 2000 in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows XP partition, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows 2000.

5. After installing Windows 2000, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows 2000 compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

7. It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing W2K.
After W2K is installed, visit the support website of the manufacturer
of each hardware device to obtain the latest drivers or software
designed to work with Windows W2K.

Are you trying to install Win2K on top of XP? If so, that could be were
you are getting your errors. Try to remove then recreate the partition
and install into it..

Any chance that u have changed your RAM. when trying to
install u should only have ONE stick of RAM in the
computer. you could very well have bad RAM. since it
doesnt seem that your win2K is bad.

Yoy "try" to help people, but you almost ALWAYS give the
wrong answer!

His problem is that he is trying to install Windows 2000
on top of Windows XP. That can not be done. Windows 2000,
in this case, requires a clean install.

If you want to answer questions, give the correct answer.
If you do not KNOW the "correct answer", BUTT OUT!

He is installing Windows 2000 to the same partition,
without first having formatted said partition. He IS
installing 2000 on top of XP. The "Programs Files" folder
is NOT imune to what he is doing! The root of Drive C: is
not imune either!

well i see i've stirred up a bit of a hornet's nest. but
thank you all for your responses. i have reformatted the
partition and booted from the win2k disk, but got error
messages that some .sys and .dll files could not be
copied. of course, the disk itself could be damaged or
dirty, but i have used it many, many times and very
recently without issue (as well as cleaned it). i am
wondering if i should write zeroes to the HD, but i don't
know what that does, if anything, to the bios. is bios
contained solely within the motherboard?

i had not heard about having only one stick of ram in
prior to install. i have run ram and HD diags and no
errors were reported, but those are consumer level
diagnostics. i am using 512 mb of samsung DDR.

you know it's hard not to be a little angry at MS for
making it so difficult to revert to prior OS's. i know
it's their business and they have an interest in making
their consumers move forward and do things like buy new
computers, but trying to get an answer to a 'simple'
question out of the knowledge base can be really
difficult.

if you read this, chris, thanks for the advice on the
ram. i guess i'll try it. in the last week i've
probably spent 100 hours trying to resolve various issues
with this purportedly high-end custom computer and am
just fried. maybe i'll start my own business and charge
$100 an hour to repartition drives...

thanks again, guys. your comments are very much
appreciated.

Greetings --

The specific problem you're experiencing is most often caused by
defective or sub-standard hardware; in order of likelihood, either
RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard. On much less frequent
occasions, a bad CD or defective CD drive can also cause this.
