I am in desperate need of help. I used the System Restore function (BIG
MISTAKE) and now Windows will not start. After the restore when the system
restarted instead of Windows XP starting, a blue screeen appeared with the
following message:

STOP: C0000135 {unable to locate component} This application has failed to
start
because basesrv was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this
problem.

What in the world happened? I thought System Restore was supposed to be
wonderful but it appears to have sabotaged the computer. What can I do to
remedy this situation?? Somone PLEASE HELP!!!!!

The likely scenario is that you used a restore point that was created prior
to some critical Windows Update being installed that fixed a vulnerability
on the system. See the following MSKB article for information on the usual
cause of this error message and behavior.

You receive a "Stop: c0000135" and "winsrv was not found" error message
after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2:
