I bought a new computer preloaded with WINDOWS XP HOME
EDITION. I need to install WINDOWS XP PRO. Can I replace
the WINDOWS HOME EDITION with WINDOWS XP PRO without losing
other applications already installed?
Can I then insall the WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION into another
computer?

A preinstalled OEM version of Windows XP is non-transferable to a
different computer. It's license is tied to the original PC it was installed
on. Purchase the "Retail Upgrade Version" of Windows XP Professional
and select the default "Upgrade" option during setup to upgrade to XP Pro.

hi..

you can install win XP pro on top of win XP home and yes
you can use the Home edition CD on another pc as long as
you have two seperate cd keys one for XP pro and one for
Home edition because of the licensing

dave

No, you cannot use "the Home edition CD on another pc".
It will not activate because its license is tied to the original OEM PC.

Probably, but to be sure and safe, I would back up before I did the upgrade.
No. It is licensed to only the machine it was loaded on. And your CD is
only a restore CD for that machine if it came preinstalled. Or there is a
pretty good chance of that anyway.

Yes, if you buy a Full Retail or Upgrade copy of XP Professional.
No, if you buy an OEM copy.

Just do an upgrade installation. However there are no guarantees
that it always works perfectly. However unlikely, it's always
possible that something might go wrong. For that reason it's
prudent to be sure you have a backup of anything you can't afford
to lose before beginning.

No. Your preinstalled version is an OEM one, and the license for
an OEM version restricts it to the first computer it's installed
on. It can never be legally sold or moved to another computer.

You can get a Pro Upgrade CD and run it from the present system to
Upgrade. That will retain all installations and almost all settings.

Even if you bought a quite independent Full copy, the license for the
Home edition you have is solely to the machine you bought it with and
you may not use it elsewhere. So you might as well get the cheaper
upgrade Pro and use the Home as the support of that license
