windows xp startup

trying to help a friend, when she tries to start her computer it gets to the
xp screen and doesn't go any farther.Any suggestions? As far as I know no new
hardware or software was installed. When I try to boot in safe mode I get a
full screen of system files Thanks

As far as Safe Mode goes, the first time often takes a little longer -
a full screen of system files is the norm fro the startup process.

Try again and see if it comes good after a little longer wait

Otherwise, I'm thinking corrupted OS or HDD breaking down (i.e. there
are essential start up files that Windows can't access/read)
