I start up my computer as normal, and the XP freezes on
the welcome screen. I've tried starting in safe mode,
with command prompt, last known good config--everything.
Nothing works. Do I need to start with a fresh install of
XP? Or is there some way I can back-door this problem?
My manufacturer is no help--they have refused to even send
me a restore (which was supposed to come with the
computer. So much for customer service.) Anyway, anyone
have any tips? I'd be greatful for any help.

You probably have a hardware driver problem. If you do not want to do a
complete reinstall then turn off every onboard hardware in the bios e.g.
sound, LAN, modem
also set the bios to the default settings. Next if you have a couple of
SIMMs in the machine remove them and just run with one. Remove the adapter
cards except for the video card. When the machine starts add one piece back
at a time.

If this fail then a repair install is the next course of action before a
complete clean install. just remember with the repair install you will have
to reinstall all of your udate patches.
