After starting the computer I am getting a message about Windows 32 system
files.
This says: These files are hidden.

The folder contains files that keep your system working properly.
You should not modify its contents.

Can anyone tell me what can be causing this box to appear.

I have tried to do as you suggested and got the following message:

This script can not repair issue. Registry value was not found.

Check that the Explorer window which is opening after starting XP is actually the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder. Have you read the KB article I mentioned? You could also perform a clean boot and see the results:

Hi Daniel
Sorry to be so long in replying to your kind advice, the problem was being
caused by "my web search" and as soon as that spyware program was removed
from the registry all was well again.
