Windows XP - Speed!

One of my clients (I am a software trainer) had the dreaded Swen virus.
Unfortunately we were unable to get rid of it using the Clean Up Tool so I
had to reload Windows XP and all his software from scratch. Luckily he had
back-ups of his data! since reloading everything the system is very
sloooooow. It is quite a high spec machine but it is painful to watch. Is
there anything I might have omitted to do which would cause it to be so
slow?

Any ideas would be gratefully received!!

Thanks
Lesley

Is there a virus?Check.Spyware,Adware so on.If Not
If you go into task manager(right click taskbar,Task
Manager)and then go into Performance,If the CPU Usage is
always around 99-100% then you may have a rouge programme
running(The CPU Usage might spike from 2%-100% from time
to time this is normal)If the usage is always at a
constant 99-100%,Close down all the taskbar icons and any
open programmes then go back into Task Manager and click
on the tab that says Processes in there you should see
all the remaining programs that are still running next to
the name of the program you should see whether it is a
system task or a user task e.g

Image Name User Name CPU MEM Usage

explorer.exe stuart 02 9,736K
iexplorer.exe stuart 00 14,720K
taskmgr.exe stuart 02 1.624K
System Idle Proce SYSTEM 98 20K
System SYSTEM 00 80K

under User name where ive written "stuart" should be the
name of the user.If you close all the programs with your
user name( in sequence)EXCEPT explorer.exe! then check if
the cpu speed has came down to about 5% or lower. If it
has not then you will have to try something different.
Tell us what Processes are running or do a search for
them on Google.
All The Best........STUART.

Thank you for your input. Firstly I know there isn't a virus as it is a
fresh install and I updated the virus system and ran that first of all.
There is no spyware or adware. I will do your suggestions though when I
next go to visit my client. I am totally puzzled by it. He does have
Incredimail - is there anything with that program that could cause a speed
problem although he did have it before and there was no detriment to the
speed.

Thank you for your useful suggestions - a lot more useful than the other two
posters who shouldn't bother to post if they haven't got anything useful to
say!

Kind regards
Lesley
