Problems associated with upgrading to SP2 have been discussed here in full.
One of those problems is that it was not able to retain the screen
resolution which changed to "chunky".

I have recently installed Windows XP from a CD which includes SP2 and it
detects a reasonable screen resolution. My questions are if it can do it
now why couldn't it do on the upgrade and, more importantly, what other
(possibly important) differences are there between upgrading to SP2 and
installing SP2?

Hi Bill,

The screen resolution issues are related to graphics card drivers, not
necessarily SP2. The problem is that if a system reverts to a standard VGA
driver, the screen appears clunky. This can happen after a clean
installation, or if the regular driver is corrupted. Reinstalling the full
driver set is the only real answer when this occurs. Windows (SP2 included
or not) only includes a basic driver that allows the graphics card to work.
For full function, the full driver set from the manufacturer must be
installed.
