windows xp sp2

last night I downloaded sp2. when I went to reboot I am
stuck in a reboot cycle, it wont start in safe mode or
anything. Is this because of sp2 or a virus? What can I
do to fix it?
 
Do you have any programs installed that may have altered the Master Boot
Record? Something like Goback by Symantec? Service Pak 2 would not install
while I had Goback installed. Goback alters the MBR... simply turning it off
does not work... it has to be uninstalled. I could get into safe mode,
fortunately, otherwise the computer was in an endless loop of restarts.
