Just did my first clean install of Windows XP in about a year. Given the
countless updates etc. on Windows Update - when will Microsoft issue Windows
XP SP2. And does Microsoft issue a Full Replacement CD for Office 2000 like
they did for previous versions of Office? Between Windows XP updates and
Office 2000 updates and the other software I have to update as well, it is
now taking eight hours spread over two days to do a clean install.

Microsoft could help with Windows XP SP2 and Full Replacement CDs for
Office. IMHO.

There is no set date for the release of SP2. i'm not sure
what u mean by the office 2000 question. why would they
need to give you a new version?

Microsoft used to give you a Full Replacement OFFICE CD with the fixes included. You simply had to prove you owned the original retail copies. Thus you didn't have to install the fixes over the original. Office 2000 is now up to three (3) updates. At the very least it took less time and less likely for errors to occur since all the fixes were included.

"To get the full version of Office 97 SR-2 Replacement CD from Microsoft call Microsoft at 800-370-9272 or 800-360-7561 to order the Office 2000 or Office XP Replacement CD. It is the Full Version of Office 97 with the SR-1 and SR-2 fixes included."

you can do this yourself it you would like. it's
called "slipstreaming" check out this site to do it for
office 20000 (http://2link.ca/tips/other/other2.htm). you
can also do it with Windows XP SP1 and soon SP2. so u
just install it and all the updates are installed with
it. i really dont know the answer if microsoft will send
u a new copy, i was make my own.

MS retail copies of XP are now being sold with SP-1 included. Office
2000 is an old version. You may be able to find a copy with SR-1
included. I'm not sure if it sold including SR-2, I don't think it
did. However, if you have a CDRW or DVD Writer you can copy the
service packs and service releases to a CD or DVD and easily install
them again if ever needed. How often do you have to re-install?

Chris,
Don't want to sound like a Pollyanna, but is this slipstreaming legal?

Hi, Yes it is providing you own a legal copy of the original software!
Many computer magazines have had articles on how to do it. A newsgroup
search will show previous threads on the subject:
http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search

A Google search will also show you many sites detailing how to do it -
one of many is:
http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/winxp-sp1-bootcd.html

Be selective about which updates you apply after the installation as
some do seem to slow things down, and hopefully a clean slipstreamed
SP2 installation (when it's out) will cure the problems......well
maybe....perhaps....only time will tell!

Last install was a year ago. That's why I was so surprised about how many
updates there were.

Since I just did the clean install, I guess I can wait for SP2 to come out.
Thanks.

Is that still true? Is that Office 97 CD with the SR-2 and SR-2 fixes still
available?
I am having quite a bit of trouble downloading the SR-and 2 fixes in
uncorrupted form.
