Windows XP SP2 corrupted my system

Windows XP SP2 failed in the middle of upgrading my
system and caused my system cannot bootup. Even the Safe
Mode does not work.

The upgrading process failed on trying to copy some files
from the temporary installation directory and complaint
that it couldn't copy the files. I look at that
directory and the files are there and I was able to copy
those files to another directory. Because of the
problem, Windows XP SP2 couldn't continue the process and
had to quit in the middle. It then restore my system to
the previous stage before upgrading. However, after the
process is done, my Windows XP is trashed.

I feel your pain. I installed SP2 and found several
incompatibilities with Office 2003 (documented elsewhere
in public news groups) so I finally gave up and went back
to SP1 which was a HUGE MISTAKE! If you ever download SP2
and decide you want to return to SP1, you can uninstall
SP2, but if you do, DO NOT - and I repeat DO NOT - install
any new security updates to XP because you will have to
reinstall Windows XP from your CD. For some odd reason,
when going from SP2 back to SP1, the I386 file stays where
it was in the SP2, which is NOT the same place as it is is
SP1 and your updates are pointed to the wrong folders.
What's more, you will lose Windows Explorer and
shlwapi.dll, and without Windows Explorer, you might as
well punt! You can't even start Windows in SAFE mode or
Last Good Configuration mode. You have to do a repair,
basically a new install of Windows XP. I learned it the
hard way...twice! If you have Automatic Update on, change
it to "Download but let me choose when to install."
 
I tried all different ways to repair it but none works. I
ended up have to completely reformat the C: drive and
reloaded Windows XP professional from scratch. After a
fresh copy of Windows XP Professional installation had
been installed (no other software was installed at this
point), I ran the Windows XP SP-2 upgrade again. Now, it
showed 4 errors during the upgrading:
- Cannot copy dmboot.sys
- Cannot copy xpsp2res.dll
- C:\Windows\inf\wmfsdk.inf is missing.
- C:\Windows\system32\setup\tabletoc.dll is missing.
(How could it be, it is a fresh new installation)

Now, my new installation of Windows XP was corrupted and
the system failed to boot up again.

I am really tire of this piece of junk.

Hi,

You might want to concider the possibility that your system hard drive is
corrupted or has bad sectors.

I would check with a good quality disk checking tool to see if there is any
such damage. If you don't have the tools to hand you could try the Ultimate
BOOT CD which is free to download:

Installing SP2 seems to be a good way of revealing latent hard disk and RAM
faults which may have otherwise gone unnoticed or mistaken for other issues.

I'm having nearly the same issue as those here. My
computer installed SP2, but it appeared there were
errors. Things touted with service pack 2, such as the
new security center and internet firewall were not showing
up in the control panel and/or were not configureable. I
decided to wait and download sp2 again and so the first
step was to uninstall. It appeared to uninstall ok, but
then restarts the computer over and over (the computer
will load to the welcome screen and will restart after it
says "loading your personal settings"). Safe mode is a
bust. Please help.

Brian,

perhaps SP2 was not completely installed and now is not
completely uninstalled.

You could try installing it again, then uninstalling it again.

Also have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm. It could
be the DEP-related issue on an Athlon 64 processor.
