Norton 2004 is your problem get rid of that garbage.

It's time to do a clean install again.

I have installed Windows XP Home Ed. on a clean hard
drive. Everything works. However, the programs seem to
slow down while running. This includes DVD, video games
and WinTV USB capture.

I have tried uninstalling & re-installing everything,
removing anything unnecessary, etc. Also Disk Clean-up.
All Windows updates are installed as well as Norton
Antivirus 2004.

Are there any drivers or software to download for better
performance?

Why is this the problem & how are you so sure?

What are the original specs?

I've got 256 RAM & 866MhZ with an 80 Gb harddrive. The
installation was from a new Windows XP disk.

Those specs should be no problem.
Maybe double the RAM if possible.
Follow the link in my last post and also be sure you have the latest
Windows XP drivers.

Also, I use Norton NIS with no noticeable speed issues.

Install XP without Norton and you'll see. Don't go on the 'net till you turn
on the firewall. Then, do all the updates.

1) Does this format my drive, or can I do it without
losing anything?
2) If I download the updates BEFORE Norton, can I then
install it again?

Change the boot sequence in the BIOS to the CD first. Power off. In sert the
CD and power on. Follow the instructions for formatting and installing. Then,
turn on the firewall before going on line.

I know HOW to do it. Yhank you.

The questions were if I will lose everything by doing
this and if I can reinstall Norton again AFTER the
updates have been downloaded.

I've lost my documents too many times to want to go thru
this again...

If there is another solution, I would prefer that first...

Start by disabling your antivirus software during normal
sessions of use. Turn it back on before you shut down or
when you want to leave the computer for a while.
