Windows xp shuts down after counting down from a minute. There is a
message saying windows must restart because remote procedure call
terminated unexpectedly; NT Authority/system.

You have the blaster virus, go to system32 / system
folser, delete the msblast.exe. That should work.

Does this affect only Win XP. How about win 2000 and Win 98. I haven't
noticed this specific problem while using Win 2000. Does this worm cause
any other problem on XP.

It has been nearly a week and you do need to look for and
fix the MSBLASTER worm.
Lots of info on all MS help&support, MS security, and all
a/v sites ( www.sarc.com www.mcafee.com and others. )

Steps advised...
Turn on a firewall
run removal program.
install the MS patch

| I get the same message, I have tried updating with all
| the service packs but still no joy, if you find a
| solution let me know, I will do likewise
