Windows XP Service Pack 2: either it doesn't like my computer or it doesn't like me!

I recently installed XP with Service Pack 2 on my IBM Thinkpad A21M.
Ever since then my system will completely lock up, requiring a hard
reboot. What's more frustrating is that it always seems to happen when
I am in the middle of a task. This never happened on this system when I
was running XP with Service Pack 1 installed. I have completely
formatted the system and reinstalled from scratch including Service
Pack 2 and the problem still occurs.

I've searched online to see if there are some particular incompatiblity
issues with my system configuration and SP2 but I haven't found
anything helpful.

I thought one possible culprit could be the video card driver I
suppose. It's an ATI RAGE MOBLILITY-M AGP - driver version 6.13.10.5805
8/27/2003. Unfortunately I do not know what specific driver version I
was using when I had SP1 on the system. I have tried a couple different
driver versions and the problem persists. I have also tried changing
the hardware accelaration settings but that hasn't helped either.
Maybe you can help.

Generally speaking, laptop/notebook computers come with proprietary versions
of drivers that are not always generic ones like you'd get from the device
vendor (such as ATI). Did you check at the IBM support area of their website
and see if they have a driver listed for your model that will work with XP?
When vendors make proprietary drivers they usually don't also distribute
them and you have to get them direct from the proprietor (in this case,
IBM). It is possible that an improper update was released by ATI, improper
in that maybe it should not have been installed onto your computer (even as
part of an update that MS makes available for all on behalf of the device
vendor as a courtesy -- and trusting that the vendor knows what the
consequences of the update will be). You could also contact ATI, who has a
pretty good technical help department, but don't be surprised if they say
you need to check with IBM.

Get the latest drivers direct from IBM, if you can. Pay attention to your
event logs in Event Viewer, too, as they might give a hint as to what's
really going on.

Yeah. I already went down that route. Unfortunately that didn't resolve
the problem.

Bleh. I've been running XP on this system for quite a while but I've
honestly been thinking about reverting to Windows 2000 ever since this
SP2 fiasco.

There's something you could try, first, that I just thought of. Right-click
My Computer and select properties, then the Advanced tab, then the Settings
buttong, then the Data Execution Prevention tab. This DEP feature by default
is at least partly turned on, with no way to turn if completely off for
troubleshooting purposes. But it can interfere with drivers sometimes and
you can turn it completely off and see if that's what's bothering your
computer.
