My machine restarts abruptly without any cause. It restarts even when
booting xp. Very strange.

What I did :
1. I thought it was a problem with the battery in my motherboard. I have
changed that. Did not work
2. Loaded xp in safemode. Did not work
3. Removed my ram. Cleaned it up. Fixed again. Did not work
4. Tried system restore to a week back. Did not work
5. Disable "automatically restart option duing system failure". Did not work.

Recent changes with my pcs :
1. I installed some anti-spywares(3 days ago) after that only I got this
strange problem.

How shall i diagnose it , what could be the cause so that I could proceed
troubleshooting it?

I like the systematic method you used to resolve the problem.
Note that changing the battery will never cure crash problems -
the sole purpose of the battery is to keep the CMOS clock
ticking over (and to "remember" a few basic settings) while the
PC is unplugged from the mains supply.

You might have a hardware problem. I would get into the BIOS
setup and leave it there for a while to see it still crashes.
Alternatively you do this:
- Boot the machine with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com.
- Remove the floppy disk.
- Keep the machine running overnight in its current condition.
- If it has crashed in the morning or if it has launched WinXP
then you have a hardware problem.

If the system restarts despite of that particular setting, you can be
pretty sure that this is caused by a hardware/firmware problem.

I kept my machine with CMOS BIOS setups open the last night. It did not
restart. How shall I proceed now?

This is getting a little dicey. Everything you report points
to a hardware problem, yet your last test fails to support
this theory. If this was my machine then I would probably
to this, in this order:
- Use System Restore to go back by two weeks.
- Remove non-essential adapters (network, sound) to
see if the problem persists.
- Borrow a small second-hand disk (10 GBytes) and do
a basic WinXP installation for testing purposes.

If you still get restarts under the last test then you have
a hardware problem. If you don't then it's time to
reload Windows.

Hi Pegasus,

The first one worked. I restored by machine to some one month back. It
worked. I am thankful to you , or else I would have thought that the os is
corrupt and would have reinstalled my os.

Thanks Again.

Gr8 of you people.
