Windows XP Restart (BSOD)

I am using Windows XP Home Edition and ran into restart issues after my firewall subscriptin ran out and I didn't renew immediately. Upon starting the system, I am taken to the "We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully,..." screen with the following options: Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last Known Good Configuration, and Start Windows Normally. Neither of these options are working.

Trying the three 'Safe Mode' options reboots the machines and takes me back the "We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully...." screen. When trying both the 'Last Known Good Configuration' and the 'Start Windows Normally' options, I get to the Windows XP Home Edition screen...showing the 3 scrolling green dots, but then I get the blue screen of death (BSOD), and then the system returns me to the "We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully,..." screen.

I also tried using the F10 (Setup) option to view and adjust setting, even restore
default settings, but nothing seems to work....the computer continues to reboot before or when XP runs.

XP came with my machine, so I don't have the XP cds, but I do have the Compaq Recovery CD. I have not yet tried using the Recovery CD, as I am concerned about losing the data on my machine when I use the CD. I have a separte D: drive installed, but I am unsure how to move or copy files from C: to D: when I cannot start windows or get to the command prompt.

If anyone has advice on what I should try next (especially around saving current files before reinstalling stuff), I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Hello, I've had a similar problem before. I ended up formatting my drive. You don't necessarily have to do this though. This should be ur last resort. I believe this is a virus at work, as it was in my case, but in any case you should definately use ur recovery CD. It should give you an option to repair windows, run that and see what happens. If it doesn't have the repair option, you should borrow the windows XP Cd from someone and boot up with it then run repair.

Hope I helped.
