when my computer is turned on i get the message: windows
did not styart etc, i have the options of safe mode, safe
mode withnetworking, safe mode with comand prompt, last
known etc, start normally.
none of these work it will go to the windows xp screen
then after 3 seconds shuts down and returns to the first
screen for safe mode.
i have tried using F8 for more options but they do the
same.
i have tried to repair using the microsoft recovery disc
but do not get the repair option it will only re-install
windows completely re-formatting hard drive, which i do
not want as there are data files which i need to get of
the hard drive.
could anyone please help get me out of this ground hog day
situation.
if so reply to (wheelerlaptop2@(remove this part)

Usually to find the repair option, you follow the install path,
and the process will detect the existing system. It will then ask
you if you'd like to do a repair.

I just did that!
You boot up with the CD in the drive.
Here are the instructions I received from a Microsoft
Technician:
When the computer boots from the CD-ROM, it will check
your hardware and then prompt you with the following
options:

*To set up Windows XP now, press Enter
*To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery
Console, press R.
*To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Please press Enter (not R).

After that, please follow these steps

a. Press the F8 key to agree to the Licensing Agreement.

b. You will see your current Windows XP installation is
listed in a box and get the following options:

*To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.
*To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP
without repairing, press Esc.

c. Please press "R"

d. Then the setup program will repair Windows XP
automatically.
