My Compaq Laptop booted with a message that something went wrong with the OS
and it gave option of booting Normal windows or safe mode. IT booted normal
windows when the time ran down then came with a message no OS found. I hit
the reset button then after the XP splash screen it goes to the boot options
again. Doesn't matter which I pick normal or safe mode it just keeps coming
back and rebooting. I guess I'll need the XP repair utilities to fix this
and want to know is it on the SP1 disc? Looked through the plastic pack that
came with the computer and can't find the XP disc only the Compaq quick
restore which would reformat the disc and all info would be lost. When I
tried safe mode that loads everything one drive at a time it always hangs
and reboots at windows/system32/agp440 something like that. I tried to
reboot using a working configuration but same thing happens. Anything I
should know about the utilities and how to use it and use after I get the
computer back and make sure it reboots fine I'll delete all the old restore
files. Does it matter that SP2 is on the computer when using the repair
utilities? I think either new defender update did something or the new BC
Wipe removed something important which is strange since the files it was
wiping had nothing to do with the OS. Older versions of BC wipe worked fine.
There is data i do not want to loss on the HD so need to fix and not loss it

Move the harddrive to a working computer, and backup the data you want
saved. Then put the harddrive back in the Compaq computer and use their
destructive quick restore disk.

If I were in your situation, I would boot the computer from either a
Knoppix CD or a BartPE CD (both free, see below), back up all my
data over the network to another machine, then reinstall Windows
from the OEM Restore disk. Knoppix will mount NTFS disks as read-
only while BartPE will allow writing to NTFS disks (in case you want
to attempt a repair yourself).

Isn't this a bit difficult with a laptop drive?

Not if you got the right tools.

I didn't know about those adapters. They could come in very handy.
Thanks
