I'm trying to access my Windows XP Home machine with a DOS boot disk that I
created. I have the appropriate drivers for the network card on the disk.
What do I need to do?

Tell us what your end goal is. If your hard drive is formatted NTFS, you
won't be able to see the hard drive from within DOS. Without knowing
exactly what you are trying to accomplish (and why), we can't give you
more specific answers.

"Don't Panic!"
MS-MVP Windows - Shell/User

SUBJECT: Access Windows XP Home Edition PC (Station1) on crossover network
from DOS-based boot disk

BOOT DISK USED: Universal TCP/IP Boot Disk for MS Networks
(www.netbootdisk.com)

STATION1: Windows XP Home Edition, SP2, 3COM Etherlink XL, IP ***.***.91.8
(first two octets hidden to avoid attack)

STATION2: SMC Etherpower 10/100 9432, IP Address ***.***.91.10

SUBNET: 255.255.255.0

TASK: Create ghost image of STATION2 stored on STATION1, and be able to
access STATION2's image on STATION1 remotely from STATION2 whenver STATION2
needs to be reimaged.

I'm going to change course. The problem is that whenever I try to use the
boot disk, the other end cannot be seen. When the boot disk finishes loading
it says "not have been authenticated with a server". Do I need some special
configuration to just access files on STATION1 from the boot disk used in
STATION2?

BTW, STATION2 normally runs Windows 98 Gold

You still haven't answered the question about with what program (or with
what technique) you are trying to image the drive. Does your
peer-to-peer network between the two machines work in Windows?

I'm not using any specific program. The two computers communicate just fine
when both are running Windows.

(I planned on repartitioning and reformatting STATION2 to install MS-DOS
6.22 with Windows For Workgroups or an earlier version of Windows NT)

Then it seems I totally misunderstood what you are trying to do. I was
under the impression that you were networking these two computers
together in order to image one of them and put that image on the other
computer.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to help you.
