windows xp registry

I have been having an issue with my Windows XP PC after I installed
SP2. The .EXE files were not recognized. I found a patch that updated
the registry and I have access to the .EXE files again. The problem is
that the settings in the registry are not being saved and I have to run
the registry update every time I start up the computer. Any
suggestions?
