I just installed Win Xp Home edition and am having trouble with the system
rebooting. It seems to only happen when I am accessing the DVD writer. I
would suspect a power supply issue, but when I had Windows 98, I ran
basically the same system and had no problems. I am new to Win Xp and not
overly impressed yet. Can anyone help.

Hi,

Right click My Computer/Properties/Advanced, click the Settings button in
the startup and Recovery area, uncheck the box "automatically restart" in the
System failure area, click OK and the reboot.
Try access the DVD writer, you may receive a BSOD instead of restarting.
Write down the complete warning message and post back to the NG so that
someonbe may help you.

BTW, let us know have you clean installed XP or upgraded Win98 to XP?
Also let us know what burning softwares you have installed.

Peter

OK, I got Windows reconfigured for not automatically restarting.
A little history. I just upgraded to WinXP. I did a full install so I could
convert my disk to NTFS. This was my real motive in upgrading. Previously I
was running 98. While running Win98, I backed up most of my computer to
DVD's using Burn for Free (a freeware program that is real easy to use for
simple backups). Tonight I have been trying to copy some of my backed up
music videos to my hard-drive.
Here is what I have noted in tonight's attempts:

File 1 Same file that caused problems last week and prompted my initial
problem. When I inserted the CD, explorer popped up and I opened the folder
where the music videos are stored on my DvD. I selected File 1 and copied
it, then navigated to the directory on my hard drive where I wanted to copy
it. I hit paste (the reason for all the detail in a minute) and the copy
appeared to be copying just fine. Just at the end of the copying process the
computer crashed to the BSOD. I received the error message shown here:
Bad_Pool_Header
Lots of other standard suggestions like "Disable Bios Memory Options such as
caching and shadowing" and then:
Technical data
STOP: 0X00000019 (0X000000020, 0XE15ED000, 0XE15EDDF8, 0XFFBFFFBF)
Beginning dump of physical memory

Interestingly, when I retured to the directory on the hard drive, I found
that File 1 had 65.2 Mb just like the original file on the dvd). However, it
would not play correctly past about 1 minute.

After restarting, I tried another file (File 2). Same process used above,
and same results except no Bad_Pool_Header message and I had the following
Technical Data:
STOP: 0X0000008E (0XC000001D, 0XBF800A3A, OXF5283CD0, 0X00000000)
Win32k.sys - Address BF800A3A base at BF800000
Datestamp 00000000

Again, after restarting, I went to a third file, only this time I did
something a little different. I navigated to the dvd folder, and copied the
file, then WITHOUT NAVIGATING TO THE HARD DRIVE FOLDER I simply pasted the
file into the directory. Voila! File 3 copied fine. I then proceeded to copy
files 1 and 2 from above using the same method. So I figured, no big deal, I
can adjust to that. But when I did navigate to the directory on the hard
drive that I copied the video files to, the computer crashed again, this
time, at least offering to send an error message, but then proceeding to the
BSOD and reporting:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
with the following technical data:
STOP: 0X00000000 (0X81C9D514, 0X00000002, 0X00000000, 0X804EF57E)

SO, quite an adventure tonight. Maybe someone can help. Thanks.

I am a mere chemist and don't really understand what all the advice on that
web page means:
Cause
The pool is already corrupt at the time of the current request.

This may or may not be due to the caller.

Resolving the Problem
The internal pool links must be walked to figure out a possible cause of the
problem.

Then you can use special pool for the suspect pool tags, or use Driver
Verifier on the suspect driver.

I don't even have a swimming pool, much less a special pool with tags! :)

I have updated all drivers that I could find. I have updated the mobo Bios.
There really is no driver separate from the XP installed drivers for my DVD
writer/reader.

Hi,

Pls post back with the detail spec of your PC:
Brand and model of the mobo as well as the BIOS version
Chipsets - Intel, Via or Sis and the INF version
Brand and model of the audio card/on-board audio chips and drivers version
Brand and model of the vedio card/on-board vedio chip and driver version
Brand and model of the DVD writer/CD-rom
Brand and model of printer, scanner, digicam, etc and the drivers version.

I think you got some corrupted drivers or XP imcompatible drivers on some
hardware devices. To get those info, you may go to belarc.com to download the
free Belarc Advisor.
After installing belarc advisor, you can get the detail info by just a click.

Pls post back to NG.

Peter

I have run the program, but am really not interested in putting all my
computer data on the internet. I tried to reply to just you. It came back
undeliverable.
Any suggestions?
Not sure what you meant reply "NG"

Hi,

NG means newsgroup.
It is very risky to provide a true email address in the internet common
chatroom unless you want to be attacked by spam mails and virus. Hackers are
using scanning softwares to scan the internet looking for the unawared
victoms.
Pls feel free to provide the necessary info to the NG so that someone may
help you.
Infact, you only need to post the required config of your PC for diagnosis,
i.e., the mobo, chipsets, CPU, ram sticks, vedio card/chips, sound
card/chips, optical drives, harddrives, BIOS version of the mobo and drivers
version of all the hardwares/chipsets. These are all essential components of
a PC.

Peter

GV,

You can use the results from Belarc but edit out things such as software
keys ( like s/n codes for XP, Office etc.). These can be used for software
piracy.

Listing the types of hardware and software titles will not cause you any
issues.

GV,

I have sent the email to your directly with the following messages:

Go to the following links to update the mobo BIOS and chipset drivers:

For mobo: http://www.tyan.com/support/html/b_s2390b.html

http://www.tyan.com/support/html/flash_utilities.html#AwardFlash

How to flash BIOS: http://www.tyan.com/support/html/how_to_flash.html

For VIA chipsets: http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2
Pls use the 4 in 1 drivers version 4.43

Go to nvidia.com to download the latest WHQL drivers.
Link: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_71.84.html

Go to creative.com to download the latest XP drivers. You can try the
autoupdate.
If it is not available for auto-update, select the correct drivers from the
list.
If you still keep the original SB box, you can easily find the right drivers.
From your hardware list, it should be Sound Blaster Live!
For auto-update link: http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/
For SB Live!: http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/download.asp
Read carefully before download and install the drivers.
You should download the Sound Blaster Live!- LiveDrvUni-Pack dated 28 Feb 03
Care: must not download the Sound Blaster Live!-Driver Patch dated 28 Feb 03
as it is
intended for updating the patch for the previous LiveDrvPack dated 17 July
2002

Proper procedures for updating BIOS and drivers:

CARE: Backup all your important data files before performing any
BIOS/chipset drivers update.

1. Go to the appropriate websites to download the BIOS/drivers and save them
to the
various specific folders. If your hardisk had partitioned, save them to
the drive other than the C drive.
Unzip them if required. Strictly following the instructions from Tyan
website for how to flash the BIOS.

2. Before flashing the BIOS, disconnect any unnecessary external devices,
e.g. printer, scanner, USB flash drive etc.
Make sure all the internal devices/power cables are properly and firmly
seated/connected.
Change the mobo battery if it is over 3 years (possible battery type
CR2032)
Make sure your home electric power supply is stable and should not
operate any machines
or electric equipments that consume large amount of electricity during
the flash BIOS status.
You should use the Award Flash Utility Flashv73 as your BIOS version is
older than 1.1

3. Read and print the instructions from Tyan.com for how to backup and flash
BIOS using the Flash Utility.
Always backup your exisiting BIOS before flashing the new BIOS.
After the new BIOS is flashed successfully, clear the CMOS and then load
the default BIOS setup and then
adjust the BIOS to suit your needs than save and exit BIOS setup.
Tips: if anything happened during the flash BIOS status (except fire
hazard, joking Ha Ha ),
do NOT power off the PC and just run the flash utility again.

4. If windows loaded successfully, the BIOS has successfully flashed and
updated.
Run msconfig and disable the antivirus softwares in the startup tab. Do
not reboot at this time.

5. Change the disply resolution to VGA mode, reboot the PC.

6. After reboot, keep the display in VGA mode and check to ascertain
antivirus is not running at the background.

7. Go to Add or remove program to remove the creative audio drivers and all
creative applications,
remove the nvidia drivers as well then reboot the PC.

8. After reboot, install the VIA 4 in 1 drivers and then reboot into BIOS,
check to ensure DMA mode are enabled for
all IDE channels (both Primary and Secondary IDE channels, master and
slave)
Disable any on-board sound/vedio if any than save and exit BIOS setup.

9. After windows loaded successfully, go to device manager to check for the
DMA mode.
Right click My Computer/Properties/Hardware/Device Manager/
Double click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, double click Primary IDE
Channel, click the Advanced Setting Tab
In the Device 0, the Transfer mode should be "DMA if available" and the
Current Transfer Mode should be
"Ultra DMA Mode 4" for ATA66 harddisk and "Ultra DMA Mode 5" for ATA 100
Harddisk.
Device 1 should be "not applicable" as you have not installed a slave
drive.
Check the Secondary IDE channel, the Device 0 should show "Ultra DMA
mode 2" for your NEC writer
Device 1 should be "not applicable" as no device is attached to this
channel.

10. Now, install the latest nvidia drivers, do not disturb until your are
prompted to reboot.
Adjust the display resoultion to your desire after the nvidia drivers
are successfully installed.

11. Install the latest creative SB Live! - LiveDrvUni-Pack drivers, reboot
when prompted.

12. After reboot, check to ensure your PC is now working properly.
If everything OK, run msconfig again and click "Enable All" under the
startup tab, click Apply and OK the reboot.

13. Ensure the antivirus is running at the background. Enable the XP
firewall if you don't have a 3rd party firewall installed.
Go to windows update site to update all the necessary patches.
I assume you have installed SP1, you can choose to install SP2 if all
your hardwares are comptible to SP2.
DO NOT INSTALL SP2 if your are in doublt that not all your
hardwares/softwares are comptible to SP2.

14. Right click My Computer/Properties/System Restore, click the settings
button and change the restore space to around 500MB.

15. Run disk cleanup and then run defrag to improve the bootup performance.

Pls let us know the outcome.

Peter,
