I've used up the number of re-activations I can perform with one XP KEY. Is
it true allowances are made for re-installing for repair reasons? Or do I
have to contact Microsoft to purchase a new key and do you have an ideea what
the charge is and how many re-instals the new key would include?

There are NO limits on activating on the same machine. use the freephone
number to activate.

You can use the phone in option. This I consider intrusive, rude and
unnecessary
in order to use a product that one has paid big bucks for.

No you haven't, since there is no such limit. You can reactivate as often as
you need or want to. The worst that can happen is that you may need to
reactivate by voice call to an 800 number instead of doing it over the
internet. But even that is normally quick, easy, and hassle-free.

No need to purchase anything. Simply activate by phone as you should be
prompted to do.

There is no set limit to be used up. What may have happened is that
your product key has been activated so many times in a short period
that it has been flagged as possibly suspect and therefore they want
you to activate by telephone. There should be no problem with the
telephone reactivation.

Is there a reason behind your apparently frequent needs to reactivate
Windows XP? I haven't had to reactivate my retail license since I
changed the motherboard about 3 years ago even though I have made a
number of changes to the components.

If you are doing a "repair installation" of Windows XP then you can
make backup copies of the wpa.dbl and wpa.bak files (in the
\windows\system32 folder) and then copy them back after the repair
install. Note that this does not work if you do a reformat and clean
reinstall.

Good luck

But you don't OWN the product! that's the MS catch-22. All you own is a
LICENCE to use it!

If you had to reinstall Windows because of some software problems, why
not just replace the activation file from a backup? It should be the
same if you do not change more than 3 pieces of hardware.

Not possible.

Is
it true allowances are made for re-installing for repair reasons?

No allowances need be made because there are no limitations.

Or do I
have to contact Microsoft to purchase a new key

No, of course not.

and do you have an ideea what
the charge is

There's no charge because there's no need to purchase a new key.

and how many re-instals the new key would include?

Well, if you were to foolishly and unnecessarily purchase an additional
license, it'd have the same number of installations as the original:
infinite.

There's no limit to the number of times you can reinstall and
activate the same WinXP license on the same PC. Nor is there ever a
charge. Nor does a Product Key (so long as it's not an evaluation
license) ever expire. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to
activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you
might have to make a 5 minute phone call.
