My computer randomly shuts down completely. I have
downloaded all updates for windows xp and McAfee, and ran
virus scan. I have found no virus'. Nothing seems to
trigger the shut down. The computer just shuts off. All
power settings are turned off and hibernation is disabled.
Has anyone seen this, and if so what can I do to stop this?

Does it also restart itself? The default when XP encounters an error is
to reboot.
To defeat this, UNcheck "auto restart" in Control
Panel|SYSTEM|ADVANCED|STARTUP AND RECOVERY.
That will allow you to see the error message, and begin to tackle the problem.

Dev, thanks for the reply. To answer your queation, it
does not reboot. The tower completely powers down. All
lights go off and the fan stops. The monitor on the other
hand, goes to sleep mode.

Well, check the obvious -- is the power supply for your tower plugged
into your electrical outlet securely? If it's even a little loose, you
might be losing power to the tower on occasion.

Or perhaps you're getting some brownouts that are knocking your system
down. That's a little harder to check for without the assistance of a
qualified electrician, but if you could get your hands on a UPS for a few
days and run your system through that you could see how often/if the UPS
kicks in.
